Coverage begins the first minute you’re on the job and continues while you are working. You don’t have to work a certain amount of time or earn a certain amount before you’re protected. Coverage is automatic and immediate. All employees are covered by worker’s compensation, with very rare exceptions. Even volunteers, undocumented workers, temporary employees, Uber and Lyft ride sharing drivers, and football players who signed contracts and played in California are covered by worker’s compensation.
Your regular commute to and from your place of employment is not considered “on the job” as you have not yet started working for your employer. However, if you are injured while on a “special mission” for your employer (such as dropping off paperwork, making bank deposits, or traveling for work purposes), the injury would be covered under worker’s compensation.
